Playing Aggressive Poker
One of the best approaches that can lead players to win at the poker table is to play aggressively. Most aggressive poker players set the tone at the table, and usually, they tend to control the action.
First, let talk about what playing aggressively means. Playing aggressively and playing loosely are not the same. Playing aggressively does not necessarily mean that players should beat every hand, or stay in a hand always for a showdown.
If players want to play aggressively, first of all they shouldn't play as many hands as most of their other opponents do. Playing aggressively means that instead of calling, they would raise, instead of checking, they would bet and if they bet, they bet more than the minimum bet allowed.
And as this kind of strategy requires players to wager more, they should of course be more selective in which hands they play. Good players don't have to win all the pots; a good player should win the biggest pot.
A good example of when a player should play aggressively is pre-flop when sitting at the table in a later position. Another is if the player is going to play a hand, they can raise pre-flop instead of just calling. Playing aggressively means pushing your opponents to pay to look at the flop and then build up that pot. Your whole goal is to select which hands you will play and then make others earn it if you do lose.
Betting pre-flop will also act a strong hand that can be utilized for bluffing which will help if the flop doesn't. If at the table there are too many callers pre-flop, then raising, this will either increase the amount inside the pot when other opponents have to call your raise, or you can force them to fold and then eliminate the chance for your opponent to back into a hand later on in the game. This is an aggressive players primary weapon, the pre-flop bet.
Another situation to be aggressive is when the player thinks that no one was helped by the flop. Most often players will merely check around and hope that they get a free card to aid them out on the turn. In this given situation, the player to bet first will mostly win since everyone else tends to fold.
At an early position betting post flop can be a defensive move. Consider betting rather than checking if you have an average hand. Because you are playing aggressively players become tentative and they will not try to push you.
If players tend to play cautiously, this will let other players control the hand and they will tend to capitalize on your weakness, but on the contrary, if you play aggressive, it is your call that will determine how to play the hand and ultimately what the stakes will be. So even when you are not in control of a hand, you are still in control of the table.
