Quotes on Poker

Some of the most popular poker quotes, and some my thoughts on them:

From William Wigstrom - "Ace is not good, Ace is God."

From Mike Caro - "Aces are larger than life and greater than mountains."

These two quotations just show how ace is really powerful in poker. After all, they are the highest cards in poker, so if you get them at pre-flop, definitely raise to isolate hands, or eliminate weaker hands.

From Amarillo Slim - "Nobody is always a winner, and anybody who says he is, is either a liar or doesn't play poker.

This is brilliantly true in poker. I believe that most poker enthusiasts have probably heard of the saying there is no such thing as "never" and "always" in poker. So whoever says that he/she is always a winner can be definitely taken for a liar or a poker idiot.

From Steven Wright - "Last night I stayed up late playing poker with Tarot cards. I got a full house and four people died." g I find this quotation very funny, and anyone who has seen Tarot cards, or at least know what they are can relate to me. This quote sounds like an entry in Reader's Digest.

From Charles Lamb, "Essays of Elia" (1832) - "Cards are war, in disguise of a sport."

This is true, and I believe in it. Poker is a battlefield, a mind-war. It's a fight to test who has the better tactics, and the cards are the weapons. He who plays his cards better in poker, wins.

From Wilson Mizner - "Gambling: The sure way of getting nothing from something."

I choose to disagree with Mizner here because if you play good poker, then you earn something. You only lose at poker when you play lousy. And even if you lose your money, it's not really a total loss, you've actually gained experience.

From Unknown person - "If, after the first twenty minutes, you don't know who the sucker at the table is, it's you."

I find this both very funny and true. I believe that if you want to win at poker, a huge part of your aim should be to be able to read your opponents. You cannot succeed in poke if you just rely on what you have, you must study other poker players' behavior and strategy.

From General David Shoup - "The commonest mistake in history is underestimating your opponent; happens at the poker table all the time."

This is most evident in poker players who have pride larger than the Mt. Everest. They are so conceited that they think no one can beat them anymore in Poker.
