Texas Hold'em Hole Cards Slang
If you've been playing Texas hold'em for a while, you know that hole cards have their own slang. Well, for those who didn't know this little tidbit, here's a breakdown of the hole card terminologies in the poker community.
There are five common hole cards lingo in Texas hold'em. These are the pocket pair, pocket rockets, the big slick, the suited, and connectors. Any other initial pair at pre-flop would count as a single of whatever cards they are.
The pocket pair is two cards with the same value. For example, a pair of sixes is called a pocket pair. This is a fine starting point in Texas hold'em since it already falls in the lower (not lowest!) poker hand ranks from the onset. These hole cards can easily go higher up in the hand ranks depending on the flop, the turn and the river.
Pocket rockets are a pair of aces for your initial pair. Now, one couldn't hope for better hole cards than this. If you're holding pocket rockets, you may either bet a big raise from the start or lure the other players in for the kill at showdown. This sounds smug but that's how most poker players feel with pocket rockets. Of course, how one actually plays them depends solely on the player.
We'll now go on to the big slick. This is an ace and a king for hole cards. Sure, this looks good at first but don't be fooled. These are high single cards and there's definitely a need for improvement. If community cards add on for a straight flush or even just a king and an ace to make a pair, these will stay on being just single high cards from start to finish.
The last two hole cards slang are the suited and connectors. So named, the suited hole cards are a couple of cards with the same suit. Connectors, on the other hand are two cards with consecutive values like a three and a four, or a queen and a king.
You never really feel like you fit in the poker world if you've got no clue about poker slang. Well, it's never too late to learn and it's pretty easy to remember the terms if you use them often. So when you get your hole cards, see if they're a pocket pair, pocket rockets, a big slick, suited or connectors. And soon you'll find hole cards slang to be a second language that took no time to master.
